MAYA ONGAKU aren’t just reviving psychedelic folk—they’re channeling a deeply spiritual, coastal soundscape rooted in their hometown of Enoshima, Japan. Their upcoming album The Spirit of the Sea, out May 30, 2025, via Guruguru Brain, continues their quiet, transcendent journey through organic improvisation and meditative grooves. Formed by Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano, and Shoei Ikeda—friends who met while working at a local record shop—the trio blend traditional Japanese elements with breezy instrumentation and cosmic textures. Recorded in a seaside studio with minimal overdubs, their sound is intimate yet expansive, evoking the rhythm of waves and the hush of dusk. With gently swirling guitars, field recordings, and a timeless sense of space, Maya Ongaku offers a psychedelic experience that’s less about escape and more about deep presence.
